CrossFit is Expensive... duh

The excuse I generally get from people when it comes to why they don’t do CrossFit is the expense of it and it was my excuse for a long time as well. There isn’t a question about it, yes, CrossFit is expensive but do you know WHY? Do you know what we trade for the expense of CrossFit?
Our box fees, for two of us, with an unlimited package, are around $250.00 a month (gasp)! That’s like $3,000.00 a year! What the hell are we thinking? You could go on vacation, you could put that in savings, you could use that for a damn car payment! Yup, we could do all those things but we choose to invest in ourselves, our health and our mental well being.
CrossFit is more than a physical change it’s a mental one as well. Not only are you learning what you are capable of on a daily basis but you are also going there for therapy. A crappy day can be completely erased with a butt kicking WOD because when you are trying to “dig deep” to finish a grueling workout, nothing else is in your brain but finishing.
We also made a lifestyle change with how we spend our evenings. We traded the bar scene for the barbell scene and it was the best decision we ever made. The hangovers from working out far outweigh the hangovers from alcohol. I would much rather limp for two days because my quads are growing than sleep for two days because I threw up from drinking.

CrossFit has changed how we socialize as well. Not only are we around like-minded people that we love and respect but we also hang out differently. We go on hikes, we eat a lot of Chipotle (yes, I KNOW the guac is extra) and we lay around the pool and talk about recovery, WOD’s and protein shakes. We have to tan those muscles so they look extra spicy in the box!
For all those reasons, I will gladly pay for the expense of CrossFit. On top of all that awesomeness we also receive phenomenal coaching, one on one attention, a box full of equipment and a box owner who puts his heart and soul into programming. There are a ton of reason’s to love CrossFit and few more are listed in more detail in a previous blog of mine: For the Love of Crossfit.
Yes, CrossFit is a luxury, I know that. However, it does come at a cost for us. My husband drives a 2002 Honda with mange (paint is peeling), we don’t eat out very often, we don’t buy a lot of frivolous things and we don’t have vacations. We made a choice to invest in what we love every day because that is what matters to us. I would rather spend my life doing something I love than waiting a year to spend a week laid out on a beach in Mexico, annoyed with the hassle of traveling and updating my passport. Besides, we can always lay by the pool and pretend.
